Marvel Studios' Eternals is finally available to stream on Disney Plus, and so are many of the behind-the-scenes commentaries for the film. In one, director Chloé Zhao talks about the film's post-credits scene that features Kit Harington's Dane Whitman, believing that scene sets up a lot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While both of Eternals' end-credits scene arguably set up a lot, as the first one introduces Starfox / Eros (Harry Styles) and Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt), Zhao believes Whitman discovering the Ebony Blade in the final end-credits scene is the one for fans to keep their eyes on. In that post-credits scene, Whitman is in his classroom at the university, where he opens an old chest inherited from his ancestors that contains a valuable family antique: the Ebony Blade.

After Sersi has been taken to face the judgment of the Celestials for ultimately deciding to kill the newborn celestial, Tiamut, while also ending the emergence on Earth, Whitman considers taking up the blade in order to save her himself, which teases the beginning of his transformation into the Black Knight. But what gets even more interesting is that while Whitman is staring at the blade and contemplating his decision, he hears a voice off-screen asking him if he is ready to harness the legendary sword, a voice that belongs to none other than Mahershala Ali's Blade. "The Ebony Blade, who would have thought. I definitely geek out quite a bit, especially when the voice that comes in the end," Zhao said to Eternals' VFX supervisors on the audio commentary track. "Sets up so much... And, I love this effect they use on the sword so much."

While Eternals co-writer Kaz Firpo said that Whitman's smaller role in the film was to allow as much room as possible for the main Eternals group, Whitman will no doubt play a much more pivotal role in future MCU projects, most likely appearing in the upcoming Blade film. Even if his character won't be delved into deeper until later down the road in the MCU, as he becomes an important member of the new Avengers in the comics, it doesn't seem to bother Harington at all, as the actor shared how he hopes to continue playing the character in many more films.

Until he gradually transforms into the legendary swordsman, fans can rewatch Harington as Dane Whitman in Eternals, a film that follows an immortal alien race returning to earth to stop their evil counterparts known as the Deviants. The film, while receiving mixed reviews overall, was praised for its ambitious filmmaking style and deeper exploration of familial and interpersonal relationships between its heroes. Eternals stars Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Lia McHugh as Sprite. A sequel is likely to begin development.

Eternals is now streaming on Disney Plus.
