The quasi-roguelike Children of Morta launches its biggest update yet, adding a new game mode called Family Trials that adds major replayability factors to the game.

Children of Morta is an action-adventure RPG where players assume the role of members of the Bergson family. With a total of 7 playable characters in Children of Morta, characters are unlocked as the story progresses. The family is a line of warriors meant to protect the world from monsters and corruption by clearing dungeons in a series of procedurally generated maps in the cavern of Mount Morta.

Now, Children of Morta puts even more emphasis on its roguelike elements with a new game mode, Family Trials, which also adds some changes to gameplay. The entire Bergson family and each of their abilities are accessible from the start. Set in a mode separate from the main story, the name of the game is to survive each level, which are filled with randomized dungeons.

This massive and free update from developer Dead Mage and publisher 11 Bit introduces two new difficulty modes, Hard and Insane, each of which requires the player to beat more levels to finish. Perhaps taking a page from Diablo's book, character builds are essential to beating runs in the Family Trials. Players will learn the best and worst builds as they complete or fail a run.

Additionally, there will be both main objectives and optional side quests that players can complete along the way in the new Children of Morta mode, such as protecting the Rea Laborers from waves of enemies to surviving hoards of corrupted monsters.

Children of Morta is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
