Tom Holland teams up once again with Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo in the upcoming film Cherry. Apple TV Plus dropped the first teaser for Cherry, which shows Tom Holland playing a character that is very different from Peter Parker.

Cherry is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Nico Walker, which follows a young man who joins the army and later becomes a drug addict and bank robber when he returns home during the opioid epidemic. The new clip shows Tom Holland as the lead character, straight-faced and wearing glasses, going to an Armed Forces career center. When asked why he wants to join up he says, "Well I've just been seeing on the news, you know, that there are kids dying over there, you know, guys from Cleveland who are my age, just trying to do something good, and here I am feeling sorry for myself because my girlfriend broke up with me." The army recruiter suggests he's searching for a sense of purpose, and we hear Tom Holland narrating that he was sworn in the next day, with the clip showing just that.

Despite teaming up with the Russo Brothers againCherry is a departure from both the directors and from Tom Holland's role as Peter Parker in the MCU. Tom Holland's voice and narration in the clip is serious, almost monotone, not resembling the energetic Queens fast-talk of Peter. It promises to be a more adult role as well; while only his beginnings with the army are seen in this teaser, the source material promises audiences will be seeing Tom Holland's character dealing with drug addiction as well as criminal activity.

This isn't Tom Holland's first role since becoming Spider-man. Among others, he featured in the period drama The Current War in 2017, and voiced characters in animated films Onward and Spies in Disguise. In 2020, he had another chance to flex his serious acting muscles starring in Netflix's The Devil All The Time, and his performance garnered rave reviews. The Russo Brothers, having already worked with him and knowing his talent, no doubt have been able to get another great performance from him.

In 2021, Tom Holland will also be starring in Chaos Walking, a sci-fi adventure based on a book series that will be out this year. In 2020 he completed filming the Uncharted movie, where he stars as a young Nathan Drake, and began production on the next Spider-man film. Between all of these projects and Cherry, Tom Holland is continuing to solidify his place and name in Hollywood.

Cherry arrives in theatres on February 26 2021 and on Apple TV Plus on March 12, 2021.
