Chernobylite is aiming to be the industry's next virally popular first-person survival game. While it found a modest level of success through Early Access on Steam, Chernobylite is aiming to have a particularly strong launch when it hits 1.0 this summer. Building to that, developer The Farm 51 has released a new trailer delving into the story and lore of Chernobylite, exploring the relationship between protagonist Igor and his sudden, violent interactions with a character named the Black Stalker.

The latest Chernobylite trailer dives deep into the conflict Igor has thrown himself into. At first, Igor claims to be a tourist coming into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. However, through his interactions with the Black Stalker, it's clear there's more to Igor's intent than he initially let on. He's searching for a woman named Tatianna, who he claims entered his dreams and told him to search for her. This displeases the Black Stalker, who is surprisingly familiar with Igor. The Black Stalker clearly doesn't want Igor and Tatianna anywhere near each other.

It's already been confirmed elsewhere that Igor is an ex-Chernobyl Power Plant scientist returning to the Exclusion Zone's nuclear wasteland 30 years after the disaster. Tatianna is his fiancee, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. There's clearly a lot more going on than meets the eye, however.

Another interesting detail revealed in the Chernobylite trailer is Igor's ability to uncover memories. It isn't clear whether they're Igor's lost memories or someone else's, but Igor is able to delve into them nonetheless. They then become explorable, otherworldly areas, not unlike the Void in Dishonored. It also isn't clear how Igor is able to delve into these memories, but it could be related to a device he's later shown placing on his head.

While the trailer may seem to imply otherwise, Chernobylite is not a game with a linear story to tell. Each playthrough of Chernobylite is unique, so players may experience the story uniquely compared to other players. That's especially true due to the multiple story-based decisions the player will make for Igor throughout the game. Some choices may not work out as well for the player as others.

The trailer's release is also intended to complement a new patch for Chernobylite's ongoing Early Access window. It accompanies what will be the final pre-launch patch for the game ahead of its release in two weeks. The patch addresses a variety of bugs and performance issues, while also adding support for additional languages.

Chernobylite releases July 28 on PC with a PS4 and Xbox One launch to follow later this summer.
