Though Marvel Comics has been venturing into space for decades, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t spent a ton of time in outer space just yet. Outside of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, visits to space have been small. That might be about to change as a rumor has surfaced that there is an MCU series in development for Disney Plus that’s actually set in space.

There’s been no official word from Disney or Marvel yet, so it’s entirely possible that this project won’t be one on the horizon soon, but might be planned for beyond Phase Four. After all, the MCU has a lot of new characters still to introduce with Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel making their screen debuts in 2022 and a film slated to center on the Fantastic Four still in development. If a space-set series is on the way, however, there are a lot of great Marvel candidates for the show to center around. This handful of characters is just a start.

Starfox

Starfox from the Marvel Comics

Introduced during one of two Eternals credit scenes, Starfox, better known by Eros in Marvel Comics, is Thanos’ brother. His brief appearance didn’t give MCU audiences a look at his powers, an explanation for his backstory, or really anything at all. The scene just provided a quick tease for his character, with his promise to help Thena, Druig, and Makkari find more Eternals.

In the comics, Starfox spends just as much time on Earth as he does traveling through space, but his space adventures would likely intrigue the MCU audience more than his Earth-bound one. A series providing backstory for the character, possibly highlighting some of his adventures before meeting up with the Eternals’ trio, would be welcomed by the audience. Plenty of the audience is wondering just how well he and Thanos even knew one another. Of course, with Harry Styles playing the character, and Styles expanding his acting credits in recent years alongside releasing solo albums, a series might be too big of a commitment for the entertainer.

Daisy Johnson

There’s a lot of debate as to whether Agents Of SHIELD exists in the main MCU continuity or not. The show features a lot of time travel as it diverges from the larger MCU, starting in Season 4. With the MCU exploring branching timelines in Loki, and the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Doctor Strange sequel, however, it might not really matter what timeline Agents of SHIELD is set. The last the audience sees of main character Daisy Johnson in the series finale is on board a spaceship with her sister and her boyfriend, so it seems like a logical step for her to feature in a series set in space.

Daisy, also known as Quake, is an Inhuman who becomes a sort of diplomat for SHIELD. She takes on the role of bringing in new recruits who are committed to stopping the bad guys. The difference is that she’s doing it in space. The idea of a SHIELD agent recruiting heroes in the far reaches of the solar system is a fun one and would make for a great series.

Abigail Brand

abigail brand in marvel comics

Abigail Brand has not featured in the MCU yet, unlike Starfox and Quake. The comic book character, however, isn’t all that different from Daisy Johnson here. She’s a secret agent as well in the comics, and she primarily operates from an outpost set just beyond Earth. For a time, she runs SWORD.

Introduced in WandaVision for the MCU, SWORD is the Sentient World Observation and Response Division. The idea of the comic book group is to protect the planet from extraterrestrial threats, and that’s not far off from what the group appears to try to do in WandaVision. Abigail is uniquely suited to work for the agency, however, as she is part human, part unknown alien species, and she’s also a mutant with the ability to understand and speak any language. That ability would give her an easy explanation for being able to interact with everyone. Her character would also allow the MCU to explore an area of SWORD only teased by WandaVision if she’s stationed at an observation point somewhere in the vast reaches of space.

The Starjammers

Starjammers

Not all Marvel Comics fans know the Starjammers, but they’re tied to the X-Men stories. With it being only a matter of time before the X-Men enter the MCU, it seems right that characters related to them that aren’t necessarily attending a school and donning blue and yellow spandex uniforms are also included in the MCU. Essentially space-pirates and freedom fighters, the group gets its name from the spaceship they use, called the Starjammer.

The original cast of characters meet and team up when they’re kept as slaves by the Shi’ar Empire. The alien race has a long history of conquering new worlds, much like the Kree in the MCU right now. The cast of characters rotates amongst the Starjammers, but their original captain is Corsair, real name Christopher Summers, who happens to be the father of X-Men members Cyclops and Havok. Because the Starjammers aren’t incredibly well known by casual comic book fans, it would certainly be an interesting way to introduce the MCU to the Summers family and to some new alien civilizations.

Nova

Nova Marvel MCU

The MCU audience was already introduced to the Nova Corps in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies - and saw them promptly destroyed. It’s entirely possible that the entirety of the guardian force wasn’t destroyed, or that some might have made their way to Earth to make Richard Rider the last Nova Corpsman.

Though Richard Rider is born and raised on Earth, he is chosen in the comics by the last surviving member of the Nova Corps to take on his powers and his cause. The power transfer actually sees Rider land in the hospital before he can officially become a superhero, but he does spend as much time in space as he does on Earth, like so many comic book heroes. Comic book fans have been wondering if Nova would ever get an MCU entry after his namesake was destroyed as the Guardians fought to keep the Power Stone safe in Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline has recently reported that a Nova project is finally in development with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada. That might make Nova the most likely candidate for the Disney Plus series - if it comes to fruition.
