Sometimes there are two sides to every story. For example, last year's controversially launched sci-fi action-RPG Cyberpunk 2077 was reported to have sold 13.7 million copies at the end of 2020, according to the game's developer CD Projekt Red. However, many are still reeling from the disaster that was the game's launch window, which saw the hotly-anticipated title plagued with game-breaking bugs and subsequent patches which seem to have done more harm than good. Now it seems as though figures for such losses have been unveiled.

Upon release, Cyberpunk 2077 was the target of much fan disappointment as gamers began to ask for refunds left, right and center. Now a recent report indicates just how much CD Projekt Red is likely to lose from this endeavor. Citing the studio's own financial report, sources indicate that the company stands to lose around $50 million in total, with the actual figure being around $51.2 million. However, it's worth pointing out that there are some caveats to this number.

Last week, it was revealed that CDPR had managed to generate enough sales of Cyberpunk to almost justify the losses. With a net profit of around 1.154 Polish Zloty, or PLN, which is around $303 million, the fact that the company is expected to lose over $50 million of that seems almost meager. On top of that, the total amount it's expected to lose also includes future refunds, so the some of the final figure is only a projection anyway.

Some of this is also not related to refunds, but overall loss in sales. At the peak of the game's release in December, Sony announced it would be pulling Cyberpunk from its PlayStation store, which means there's potentially millions more that CD Projekt Red could have made immediately after launch. As of now, Sony still does not seem keen to put the game back onto its store, even after numerous patches have been released which have aimed to fix some of the main issues with the game.

All-in-all Cyberpunk 2077 has been something of a double-edged sword for the Witcher 3 developer. Despite the controversy surrounding the game's release and subsequent issues, the game has no doubt been a huge success on the whole. Upon release late last year, it topped the gaming charts in places like the UK, and from a story and visual perspective, it's received high praise pretty much across the board. Arguably, then, it's still something of a success story for CDPR even if it's about to lose tens of millions in revenue.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
