When CyberPunk 2077 revealed that it would be delayed yet again, this time by three weeks, fans of the elusive upcoming title were filled with both frustration and confusion. Just as people were starting to wrap their heads around the new CyberPunk game being delayed again, it's now come to light that even the game's developers didn't know that this delay would be happening.

Often players assume that developers have more control over a game than they do, and that is clear now more than ever. In the case of CyberPunk 2077, developers have come out in public and told fans that the game would not be delayed again, but now it seems that they don't have as much of a say in the matter as was once thought.

This news comes by way of Jason Schreier, who revealed in a tweet that the CyberPunk 2077 devs learned about the delay at the same time as fans. Apparently, an email was sent out to all of the company's employees simultaneously when the tweet that went out to the public was sent.

Schreier claims to have been in contact with a number of developers at CD Projekt Red, as well as some former developers that quit due to harsh working conditions. 2020 has been a great year for gaming, but it's also set the stage for discussion about crunch culture in game development. Most notably, it was revealed that the staff at Naughty Dog was worked to the bone in order to make The Last of Us 2 the best it could be, and this has brought up questions about ethics in gaming.

According to the official tweet that announced the delay, these 21 days will be used by the staff to put some finishing touches on CyberPunk 2077 and finish creating nine different versions of it for the various consoles it will release on. According to Schreier, this likely won't affect developers that much since they'd be working on patches and post launch support during these 21 days anyway, but it's upset fans nonetheless. With each new incident like this, more fans are calling for some serious reform in the game development industry to ensure that developers are taken care of.

With any luck, this will be the last of the several CyberPunk 2077 delays, but many fans are starting to lose faith in CD Projekt Red. It will ultimately be up to each player to form their own opinion about the company, but the state that CyberPunk 2077 is in when it does finally launch will certainly shape how fans perceive it.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases December 10th for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
