Despite its problematic launch, CD Projekt Red hopes that Cyberpunk 2077 will be a game that people play for "years to come." Though CDPR has announced many changes in regards to its business strategy recently, it has no plans to give up on fixing Cyberpunk so that more people might be able to experience it in the future.

CD Projekt Red's biggest title prior to Cyberpunk 2077The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was a widely successful game. Though it was originally released on last-gen consoles nearly six years ago, many gamers still play the game today. It has sold over 28 million copies, making it one of the best-selling video games in history. Now, a port of Witcher 3 is in development for the Xbox Series X and PS5, set to launch sometime later this year. Because of this, it's likely that players will continue to experience Witcher 3 for several years to come.

But Cyberpunk 2077's reception is quite the contrast to Witcher 3. Though both games were criticized for glitches at launch, Cyberpunk's essentially made the game unplayable for many, especially for those playing on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles. This resulted in its catastrophic reputation, as well as multiple class-action lawsuits against CDPR and the game being removed from the PlayStation Store. Still, CDPR is optimistic that Cyberpunk 2077 will one day be the game fans had dreamed of.

To Reuters, CEO Adam Kicinski said that there's no option to "shelve Cyberpunk 2077." He continues, "We are convinced we can bring the game to such a state that we can be proud of it and therefore successfully sell it for years to come."

But it's clear that CDPR has its work cut out for it. It recently released the massive patch 1.2 for Cyberpunk 2077, which was geared at resolving a number of bugs across all platforms. However, it, in return, also caused some new bugs to surface. It was also meant to help the game run better on last-gen consoles, but players on the PS4 and Xbox One are still reporting troubling frame rates and rendering issues, just what Cyberpunk had been plagued with at launch.

Additionally, earlier this year, CD Projekt Red was hit with a cyberattack from an anonymous user or group of people demanding ransom and threatening to release stolen code of Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. While those responsible for the attack made it clear its intentions were a sort of punishment for CDPR's questionable marketing decisions, this hacking incident has only hindered CDPR's goal to fix the buggy game.

While it's clear that both of CDPR's flagship titles Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have strong legacies, the reputations are vastly different, and investors and gamers alike await to see how CDPR plans to bounce back from Cyberpunk's faulty release.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming later in 2021.
