Powerhouse Animation Studios, which is known as being the company behind Netflix's Castlevania, has revealed scrapped plans for an animated Marvel television show that was pitched many years ago. The team behind Castlevania would have done several episodes exploring the many decades of Marvel's comic book history while touching on different stories and characters.

The scrapped project was called Marvel Era and had been pitched in 2012-2013 because Marvel's 75th anniversary was coming up in 2014. The short stories would represent each decade of Marvel's history and each episode would feature animation that reflected the art style of the era being honored.

The team ended up making a quick proof of concept video to help visually explain the idea since they were pressed for time and weren't as big as they are today, as Netflix's Castlevania series was still years away from becoming a reality. Powerhouse Animation Studios CEO and CCO Brad Graeber wrote on Twitter that around 14 different rough concepts were written. Graeber said that these ideas included a "['40s] Captain America d-day story in the style of Fleischer studios, a Submariner U-boat story, a 60’s X-men story that featured a mutant who led a cult with his powers."

"There was also a very cinema ['70s] Luke Cage and Iron Fist, an ['80s] Punisher story that leaned into SCARFACE and MIAMI VICE, and a DEADPOOL story made based on cheesy '90s cartoons," Graeber added. Unfortunately, "studios politics" was part of the reason why the project never came to be, but Graeber noted that it was probably for the best because Powerhouse Animation Studios would eventually go on to produce Netflix's Castlevania series. The animation in the proof of concept video for Marvel Era is evidently dated and the studio is aware of how much better it got at its craft. In fact, in addition to Castlevania, the studios went on to do Mortal Kombat X (2015), Agents of Mayhem (2017), Seis Manos (2019), Blood of Zeus (2020–present), Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021–present), Tomb Raider, and Skull Island.

This was during the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so Disney's purchase of Marvel was still new and the company was still separated into different sections. Powerhouse Animation Studios actually proposed a piece that was similar to Marvel Studios' What If...? series for Disney Plus. The whole thread can be read on Twitter with some interesting backstories and more insight.

It's a shame fans never got to see this come to fruition. Maybe Powerhouse will get a second chance or end up doing something for DC, which usually takes on darker stories, and fans could see a darker version of Batman or maybe a Green Arrow story. Only time will tell, but right now the studio has a handful of upcoming projects, so it's always busy.
