There is a distinct lack of Castlevania games these days, as Konami seems to have all but abandoned the beloved vampire slaying series. When game companies aren't producing the games they want, though, fans sometimes take matters into their own hands.

This is the case with Castlevania: Simon's Destiny, a fan-made remake of the original NES classic, but from a first-person perspective. It's the series' first foray into first-person, though in an unofficial capacity, and it kinda works. For a clearer idea of what first-person Castlevania looks like, check out the game's trailer that dropped, appropriately, in late October.

If your first thought that it looks chaotic, but fun, we agree. If your second thought is that it looks similar to Doom, there's a reason. The creator, Batandy, built Castlevania: Simon's Destiny on top of the Doom engine, through an enhanced port called ZDoom. It is a completely different game, however, with enemies and weapons plucked straight out of the NES title. In fact, the game's levels are directly inspired by the original Castlevania as well.

You can download the game on the creator's website (you'll also need GZDoom). As unfortunate as it is, this game likely won't be around for long. There's a strong chance Konami will take action once it catches wind of the project.

For now, this is the closet thing fans will get to a new Castlevania, as the only thing Konami has approved lately is the Castlevania Netflix series. It was a short affair, with only four episodes in its first season, but it has been renewed for a second. There are lot of mixed feelings on the show. On one hand, it's amazing to see anything from the series adapted to television, but on the other, it wasn't very true to the source material, very loosely following the events of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse.

Before that, Komani's European brand manager made a statement saying the company was looking into demand for Castlevania. He noted that Konami was well-aware of requests for a new game, but little has been done in response.

The fan-made Castlevania: Simon's Destiny is available now.
