It was two years ago that the promise for Carrion was first given. The premise was simple and brilliant: in Carrion, players are the monster.

Now Carrion is officially unleashed, and it has delivered on its premise. Players take on the role of an amorphous mass of flesh, eyes and teeth straight out of a Lovecraft story. The monster's goal is to escape the confines of the base where it awakes, devouring foolish humans along the way. Of course, even for an increasingly powerful horror film monster, there are still obstacles to overcome.

While Carrion's animated trailer makes it look like nothing can stop the sneaky, bloody menace, there are some significant roadblocks. The biggest ones are often heavy metal doors that must be opened with switches. In some cases though, a laser trap will shut these doors automatically. In these cases, the player must sneak by the lasers without tripping them. Since there's no Katana Zero style dodge roll on hand, here's how to do it:

Find the Invisibility Powerup

The actual format of Carrion is a Metroidvania game, which means there are various powerups to make the monster deadlier. One of these lets the monster turn invisible. Anyone who hasn't come across this powerup yet shouldn't fret, it will appear with progress. Until it does, however, there is no way to get past the proximity lasers, so don't bother.

Become Small

One thing that made Carrion one of the most anticipated horror games of this year was the ability to be big. A huge, amorphous blob of tentacles is not the usual game protagonist, but it's certainly a fun one. Sometimes though, being huge is not ideal. The invisibility powerup doesn't work unless the monster is at its smallest size. This can be changed by soaking in a pool of water to drop pieces of the monster's body, but be careful. The monster's size and its health are one and the same; at its smallest, it can only take one hit.

Charge Up

Using the invisibility powerup requires energy. The monster can regain energy by devouring energy crates, so players will have to hunt some down if not properly charged. Once the monster has enough energy, it will have to shrink, turn invisible, and quickly slip through the laser before power runs out. Anyone with Steam, a Switch, or Xbox Game Pass can try out Carrion now, so take a look.

Carrion is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
