So many have been silenced, but voices are being ignited once again in She Said, a film adaptation of the book written by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, the journalists at the New York Times who brought film producer Harvey Weinstein's abuse and sexual harassment to the surface, sending the #MeToo movement in motion.
Universal Pictures' She Said follows Kantor as she sets out to examine and disclose the sexual harassment and misconduct within the entertainment business. Kantor soon teams up with Twohey and the women try to help victims speak out about their abuse to help bring down what the trailer calls “a system bigger than Weinstein, a system protecting abusers.”
The first glimpse at She Said paints the journey of disclosing the truth about Weinstein, not just for the two journalists but for his victims. The trailer depicts women being approached by Kantor and Twohey about working closely with the producer, resulting in them hanging up the phone, slamming the door in their face, and blatantly refusing to speak on the matter. However, the trailer hits its peak when one woman changes her mind as she thinks about her young daughter and how she doesn’t want her to settle and sit in silence with the pain of abuse.
“Two-time Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation— a story that helped propel the #MeToo movement, shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and altered American culture forever,” reads the official synopsis from Universal. She Said is directed by Emmy winner Maria Schrader, perhaps best known for helming Netflix's Unorthodox limited series, and the screenplay was penned by Oscar winner Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The rest of the cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Andre Braugher, Samantha Morton, Tom Pelphrey, and Adam Shapiro.
From the looks of the first official trailer, She Said will be an emotional rollercoaster with its depictions of misogyny and the truths behind the power imbalances in Hollywood that still exist. Stories like these are hard to swallow for many, however, the #MeToo movement gave so many women the courage and strength to come forward and share their stories of abuse, ultimately leading to Weinstein's conviction of 23 years in prison for sexual assault and third-degree rape.
She Said's release later this year will definitely ignite many emotions and will most likely give many women and men who’ve suffered from sexual abuse of any kind the courage to come forward and share their stories.
She Said comes to theaters on November 18th, 2022.
