Super Smash Bros Wii U Captain Olimar

One of the best parts leading up to the release of a new Super Smash Bros. game has been the recent trend of slowly revealing new additions to the forthcoming title via the game's official website. Every week day the creator of Super Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai, has been releasing a new screenshot of the game running on either 3DS or Wii U. Thus far the daily updates have just been in-game screenshots of the fighters confirmed for the brawler thus far... until today that is.

On the eve of Pikmin 3's arrival in Japan, Sakurai has revealed that franchise protagonist, Captain Olimar, will be rejoining the fray with his trusty Pikmin in tow. The character originally made his Smash debut in Brawl, and many fans were worried that he may be replaced by the likes of any one of the three new protagonists in Pikmin 3 — fortunately, that's not the case.

Judging by the batch of new screenshots, Olimar looks as if his core move set will remain intact, although the lack of either the new Rock or Winged Pikmin being implemented into the combatant's arsenal is a little puzzling. Combo that with a recently deleted tweet from Nintendo of America stating that Alpha, who makes his debut in Pikmin 3, has been confirmed as a playable character, and it looks like Olimar may not be the only mascot representing the franchise.

As many die hard Smash players are aware, not all characters will be returning in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, so this veteran's confirmation is a relief to some. There are still a number of fighters from previous entries that have yet to emerge — Game Rant even made a list of the top five characters that may not return in the new Super Smash Bros. — and it'll be interesting to see who makes the final cut.
