Making movies is a long and involved process, even more so for blockbuster films like those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Every single film requires a dedicated team of actors, designers, stunt coordinators, special effects workers, and many, many more. One of the less visible parts of the job is that of stunt concept, but a recent video shows a little behind-the-scenes glimpse at what Captain Marvel's fight sequences looked like before everything was set in stone.
While she isn't a Hollywood superstar like Brie Larson, Joanna Bennet is just as responsible for bringing Captain Marvel to life as Larson. Bennet is an actor and stunt double who has worked on several Marvel projects and, in particular, she served as Larson's stunt double in Captain Marvel, bringing to life the fight scenes and stunts that Larson was not trained to do herself.
Being a stunt double requires a lot more than being able to take a tough hit, and part of the process for filming fight scenes in big films is designing what those sequences might look like given the abilities of the character and what kind of conflicts they are involved in. Sometimes the best way to do this is to create a concept video showing off various moves and the equipment needed to pull them off.
So, here we introduce the concept stunt video produced for Captain Marvel. Bennet shows off everything she's got, beating down foe after foe using a combination of hand-to-hand combat and some example superpowers rendered in quick and dirty CGI. It's all very impressively coordinated and set to some lovely classical music for the enjoyment of the audience.
It's an interesting behind-the-scenes peek at what a stunt double spends their time doing day to day, rehearsing and practicing a complex series of choreographed fights and it goes to show how solid stunt work can be entertaining in its own right, even before the costumes, sets, and special effects are all in place.
Hopefully, some of these moves and ideas make their way to the inevitable Captain Marvel 2. At the very least, the delays across the industry will give stunt coordinators the chance to put their all into their fight scenes, and maybe that will give the next phase of Marvel films just a little bit of an edge.
Captain Marvel 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 11, 2022.
