Actress Zawe Ashton will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the next villain in Captain Marvel 2. Brie Larson's Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel will go up against Ashton in the Marvel Studios sequel, though it is still unknown which comic book character will be penned into the script as the superhero’s nemesis.

Nia DaCosta was brought on as director for the film, whereas Megan McDonnell, a story editor on Disney Plus’ popular series WandaVision, has written the script for the follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel, the film that introduced the first female lead superhero to the MCU. The sequel will also feature Iman Vellani, who will play Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris, reprising her role as Monica Rambeau, who was introduced as a child in the first Captain Marvel.

Ashton was most recently applauded for her role in the Netflix original Velvet Buzzsaw, a horror-comedy released in 2019 that focuses on the art world in Los Angeles. She has also appeared in several theatre productions, with the most recent one being Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston. Rumors of her joining the MCU had been making the rounds lately, with talks about Marvel looking to cast a female African-American role surfacing just a few days ago.

In the first Captain Marvel film, the protagonist went up against Yon-Rogg, leader of the Kree team Starforce, who was played by actor Jude Law. While the movie delved into Captain Marvel’s backstory, the sequel will take place in the MCU’s present, following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

As a part of Marvel’s Phase Four, the movie’s script will have crossovers with Disney Plus’ WandaVision, the story of Wanda and the Vision’s life in Westview that is already available to stream, and Ms. Marvel. The latter is the story of a 16-year-old Pakistani-American student who idolizes Carol Danvers and upon gaining superpowers, takes on the title from her favorite superhero. The show is expected to air on Disney Plus later this year. While there is still no news on when production will begin, Captain Marvel 2 will be filmed in the UK.

Captain Marvel 2 will arrive in theaters on November 11, 2022.
