Marvel fans take their superheroes very seriously, and that was evident on Monday night when they were up in arms over a small change that one of the Marvel-related Twitter accounts had made. With What If…? premiering on Wednesday, the official Captain America Twitter account decided to change its profile picture and name from Sam Wilson to Captain Carter, and some Marvel fans were not happy.

Within a few hours, several upset fans had posted comments on Twitter, urging Marvel to bring back the Falcon. The conversation picked up pace when Sam Wilson started trending on the social media platform, with fans expressing their dislike over the decision to change the face of the Captain America account.

The decision, which is most likely a temporary one, has not been welcomed by Marvel fans on Twitter and the storm began when the account tweeted, “See Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers in a whole new way this Wednesday when the first episode of Marvel Studios’ #WhatIf starts streaming on @DisneyPlus.” Seems like an innocent tweet, but it was enough to get fans riled up. Many of them are campaigning for Marvel to “Bring back Sam Wilson,” whereas others are criticizing the studio for dedicating the account to the wrong character. This is because it's a Captain America account, but Captain Carter, suited up in the colors of the Union Jack, is its face.

In April, when the Disney Plus series The Falcon and Winter Soldier ended its six-episode run, the Captain America Twitter account had officially welcomed Sam Wilson into his new role by changing the page’s profile picture and description to reflect his journey. At the time, Marvel fans were saddened to see Chris Evans being moved out of the picture, quite literally, but at the same time welcomed the first ‘Black Captain America’ to the forefront. Marvel had even released an official poster to welcome Wilson into his role as the Cap.

Marvel’s first animated series What If…? will look into some iconic tales from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but look at them in a different light, exploring alternate realities. The first episode of the series will focus on Peggy Carter, portrayed by Hayley Atwell, and what would happen if she were to take the super-soldier serum that gave Steve Rogers his powers. It is already known that the episode and series will see her rise to the role of Captain Carter, which is probably why the decision was taken by Marvel to swap Wilson for Carter to promote the upcoming episode. It remains to be seen how Marvel responds to the criticism from its fanbase.

What If…? premieres on Disney Plus on August 11, 2021.
