With Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson accepting the mantle of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, audiences are in for a new take on the hero. Several factors play into this fresh new direction, and Mackie has plenty of thoughts on them.

Mackie has talked about how different his Captain America will be in the past. One of the main aspects he's brought up is that, unlike Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, Sam has no super serum enhancing his abilities. His fighting skills and physical prowess are all completely self-made, making his version of the hero more relatable to viewers. Fans will see him in action in Captain America: New World Order, but right now, he's got more to elaborate on the subject, including some thoughts regarding the outfit.

In an interview with Yahoo, Mackie confirmed that his upcoming first feature film playing Captain America (or "Cap") will begin filming soon. Then he got down to the gritty stuff. "My Cap, he's not a superhero. He doesn't have a super-serum. So his superpower is his humanity. So I think with him he has to come to the stage with a very different understanding of what it is to be a good guy or be a bad guy, and what are the decisions that make you tow that line in the way that you did," Mackie said. "I just see him as more of a humane Cap, as opposed to a Cap of judgment, where this is right, or this is wrong. There are decisions that make you choose right or wrong."

Mackie's reaction to being cast as Captain America is still as strong as ever. He previously spoke about how he's happy to be part of something his kids can watch, and this much more human take on the hero seems perfectly in line with that sentiment. But that doesn't mean he can't get superficial like everybody else. "And [he has] a flyer costume," Mackie added cheekily. "Cause it's leg day every day [in the gym]. We going straight spandex, none of this cotton stuff. We doing straight spandex." The wordplay, whether intentional or not, is pretty amusing, seeing as how "flyer" could refer to both the wings on the outfit and the fact that it arguably looks way more fashionably "fly" than previous versions.

Mackie has a lot going on, including the Netflix horror comedy, We Have A Ghost, in which he'll star alongside David Harbour. So it's nice to see he still has an eye on Captain America amidst all the exciting new developments in his career. For many, Sam Wilson is the role that brought Mackie into the spotlight, even if he'd already been an immensely accomplished actor before his first appearance as the character. He appears to hold a certain amount of affection for the role, which fans love to see.

Aside from Captain America: New World Order and We Have A Ghost, Mackie is slated for the main role of John Doe in Peacock's upcoming Twisted Metal series based on the video games of the same name. So it's safe to say that this remarkably talented actor is absolutely no one-trick pony. Here's hoping he keeps getting to do the things he loves.

Captain America: New World Order is scheduled to release on May 3rd, 2024.
