Anthony Mackie's Captain America will make his first lead role appearance in Captain America: New World Order. While details about the movie are scarce, on-set photos have given fans a peak at what's in store for the fourth installment in the Captain America franchise.

Mackie first appeared as Sam Wilson, a.k.a Falcon, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Following Captain America's departure from the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame, Sam was tasked with taking up the Captain America mantle. The Disney Plus miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier explores how Sam struggles with taking on this responsibility and follows his journey to accepting his role as the new Captain America.

Now, Mackie's Captain America is finally ready to take center stage. Filming for Captain America: New World Order began on March 20th and is scheduled to continue until June 30th. The first of what will surely be many behind-the-scenes pictures was posted shortly after filming began. While they don't reveal much about the movie's details, they feature Mackie on-set in what appears to be civilian clothing. Another set of pictures focuses on the set piece for Smyth's Diner, a location pulled from two issues of Captain America comics. In the comics, Smyth's Diner is set in Maryland; however, a jersey in one of the pictures suggests that the movie version of the diner is in West Virginia instead.

While it's unclear what Sam Wilson would be doing in a diner or West Virginia, some details about the movie have been confirmed. Shira Haas will be playing Sabra, an Israeli superhero who makes her MCU debut, and Harrison Ford will be taking over the role of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Ross was previously played by William Hurt, who died in 2022. The last time audiences saw Ross, he was a general and Secretary of State. In Captain America: New World Order, he has risen to the rank of President of the United States.

Since Marvel Studios is taking extra precautions to prevent leaks like the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania transcript leak, it's fair to assume that fans will only receive slight, vague hints about what Sam Wilson will be up to and up against in Captain America: New World Order. While the release of the pictures of Smyth's Diner might mean the location isn't important to the movie's plot, it raises questions about why Sam is there in the first place.

In Adventures of Captain America, two characters escape Das Vernichtungs-Kommandos, or Killing Squad, and take solace inside Smyth's Diner. Although it's possible that this inclusion could be an Easter egg for eagle-eyed fans, it could also hint at the potential antagonist of the movie. While the Killing Squad hasn't been mentioned in any Marvel Studios movies and is a group that exists during World War II in the comics, the MCU is known for taking elements from well-loved comic runs and giving them a makeover for the big screen.

Captain America: New World Order is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 3rd, 2024.
