As production for Captain America: New World Order progresses, fans are looking for any hints they can get about what Sam Wilson is in store for as he takes on the mantle. Now, new set photos suggest Captain America 4 could feature a major character death.

Directed by Julius Onah and written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, Captain America: New World Order will be the first movie featuring Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. Mackie is joined by Danny Ramirez playing Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon; Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, a former super-soldier who appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier; Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns, a cellular biologist with ties to the Hulk; Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, a cellular biologist and ex-girlfriend of Bruce Banner; and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Betty Ross's father and the President of the United States during the events of the movie. Mackie has quite several supporting cast members - unfortunately, not all of the characters will survive.

Captain America 4 set photos posted by Jo Entertainment Studio on Instagram show both Mackie and Tyler in a cemetery wearing what appears to be funeral attire. Also present in the photos is a woman in military garb, which suggests that Sam Wilson and Betty Ross are attending a military funeral. Something that is also of note is that Mackie is wearing a sling over his formal black suit - whatever happened before the funeral left Sam injured.

Captain America: New World Order occurs during Marvel Studios' Phase 5, which is set to include many heroes who haven't had a chance to step into the limelight. The Marvels, Thunderbolts, Blade, and Echo will all focus on characters who aren't necessarily new to viewers but haven't been given space to tell their stories. Captain America: New World Order is no different. This will be the first MCU movie led by Mackie's Sam Wilson and will re-introduce Betty Ross, Samuel Sterns, and Thunderbolt Ross to the MCU. The movie also marks the first big-screen appearances of Joaquin Torres and Isaiah Bradley, two characters who had previously only been seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Because many fans have been assuming this new Captain America movie will set the stage for future character arcs and interactions, the suggestion of a significant character death is surprising.

Whose death Sam and Betty are mourning is still in question. Because Betty is Thunderbolt Ross's daughter, it's possible that the funeral could be his. However, with Thunderbolts set to release not long after Captain America: New World Order, it's unlikely that President Ross will be the one six feet under. Others speculate that the funeral is for Steve Rogers, whose death has not been confirmed on-screen. While this wouldn't be a shocking death, it would be a fitting one. With Sam Wilson taking over Steve Roger's former title, it's almost poetic for Steve Rogers' Captain America journey to end as Sam's officially begins.

Captain America: New World Order releases in theaters on May 3rd, 2024.
