In late 2019, a rumor started swirling that Capcom was set to announce two new games in the relatively near future. Capcom, since then, has only had one such major announcement - that being Resident Evil 3 Remake, which launches April 3. The second game, speculated to be a fighting game, went missing. At the time, it was dismissed as an incorrect leak, but there's now evidence a Capcom fighting game announcement may be forthcoming.

The leak comes from an official source this time. The voice actor for V from Devil May Cry 5 appears to have revealed some insider information, either accidentally or in a well-planned tease. Brian Hanford posted to Twitter Saturday afternoon that he's, "Absolutely pumped for the next #CapcomVS game!!" While it's not an announcement, it's about as close as a leak gets to one. Handford's tweet closes out saying, "New characters but could be VERY familiar..."

There are a couple of suspicious details about Hanford's Capcom vs. leak. First, he hasn't deleted the Twitter post despite it being widely reported on. If he had broken an embargo or a non-disclosure agreement, that tweet would be deleted with urgency. Second, Hanford's tweet is quite intentionally vague. That he names the game "CapcomVS" and not its full name, and that he says there will be new but very familiar characters is almost too ambiguous to be unintentional.

Regardless of whether it's a well-intentioned leak or a bit of clever marketing intended to look like a leak, it seems like a new Capcom vs. fighting game is in the works. Handford's tweet has done a great job of not revealing what brand or franchise Capcom will be facing off against, leaving fans to use their imagination.

The last Capcom vs. title released was Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite in 2017. Marvel vs. Capcom is the most popular of the Capcom vs. titles, but it's also just one of many. Despite its recent, under-performing iteration, a new Marvel vs. Capcom would still be the most likely sequel. A new Marvel vs. SNK or Tatsunoko wouldn't be impossible, though.

As for when fighting game fans can expect Capcom to make an official announcement, that's the next most interesting question to be answered. No major events are announced for the relatively near future. However, there are rumors about both a PS5 reveal event with lots of new game announcements and a new Nintendo Direct that may have some reveals coming up soon. Of course, it may just be a fake or mistaken leak and there's no announcement planned at all. Time will tell.
