While there's no doubt that a plethora of gamers were excited to learn that Devil May Cry 5 is officially in the works after Capcom unveiled the forthcoming sequel during Microsoft's Xbox E3 2018 press conference, there may have been some wondering why the company skipped a direct follow up to 2013's DmC: Devil May Cry from Ninja Theory. With this being the case, the publisher and developer has decided to address this issue by explaining why a fifth numbered entry is in the cards this time around.

According to Capcom, Devil May Cry 5 was chosen as the next project for the franchise in order to deliver a proper sequel to DMC4, but this doesn't mean that the publisher and developer doesn't hold Ninja Theory's take on the series with 2013's DmC: Devil May Cry in high esteem. As explained by Capcom producer Matt Walker, "[Devil May Cry 5] is definitely a game for the fans – we’ve heard fans asking for a sequel to the storyline of DMC4 for over ten years. But this isn’t a slight at Ninja Theory or DmC at all. We all love DmC."

Additonally, Devil May Cry 5 game director Hideaki Itsuno has said that he believes DmC to be an incredibly significant game in the franchise as a whole, despite the fact that it is regarded as a reboot of the series. According to Walker, "Itsuno-san himself has explicitly stated that in his mind, DmC is just as important as any of the other titles in the series, and he’s just as proud of it,” especially when it comes to all that the director learned from the 2013 title's development.

“We learned a lot from working with Ninja Theory on that title, and we hope that they benefited in some way as well. Itsuno-san has stressed several times in conversations with me that he’s taken what he’s learned from working on DmC and applied what he’s learned specifically to what we’ve done on DMC5.”

Taking all of this into consideration, it will be interesting to see if any design or gameplay elements from DmC make their way into Devil May Cry 5 once the title officially comes out next year. That said, though, as far as combat is concerned, it looks as if the sequel from Capcom is aiming to "expand more on the combat philosophies established in DMC1-4."

Devil May Cry 5 is scheduled to release at some point in spring 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
