Dozens, if not hundreds of new shows premiere each year, both on TV and on various streaming services, such as Netflix, HBO, Amazon, and Disney+. With such a large number, it makes sense that not every show becomes a hit. The past is full of examples of TV shows that were canceled after just one season despite being of high quality.
The 2020s are no exception to this rule. Even though the new decade has barely started, multiple series have already failed to impress the audience or the network enough to warrant getting a new series.
8 Call Your Mother
Starting a new life somewhere else is never easy, no matter how old the person is. In the case of Call Your Mother, two young adults move and their lonely mom decides to visit them and see what their lives are like. Unsurprisingly, they're far from ideal.
The show focuses on both family and romantic relationships. The characters gradually find their way to each other but it doesn't happen without a lot of funny, sometimes embarrassing, situations. It also shows that it's possible to build a tighter bond with a family regardless of someone's age.
7 Country Comfort
Sitcoms are a popular genre, so not each of them makes it and becomes a new hit. Country Comfort combines comedy and musicals, which doesn't fit everyone, especially those who don't like country music.
The main heroine, a country singer named Bailey becomes a nanny for a cowboy, Beau, who has five children and discovers this family is much more musical than she'd expected. The show has all the attributes needed for a feel-good piece and it will be familiar to all who live in a large family.
6 Cursed
Cursed had the potential to become a new huge fantasy hit, especially now that Game of Thrones is over. Unfortunately for its fans, it was canceled after just one season. One possible reason is that it makes significant changes to the Arthurian myth which not everyone liked.
Despite that, Katherine Langford gives a solid performance as the young Nimue. The series will be interesting for all Frank Miller fans since it's based on his comic book. And since it has only ten episodes, it's possible to binge-watch it on Netflix.
5 Dash & Lily
Sometimes TV series manage to tell their story in just one season, so there's no reason to renew them. That's also the case with Dash & Lily. While the story could go on and show what happened after Dash and Lily got together, it still feels like a story with a clear end.
After all, the first season is all about the protagonists finding their way to each other, and once they do, the end comes. The show is ideal to watch during Christmas since it has a strong Christmas atmosphere and offers a lot of optimism and cheer.
4 Generation
Some series work with a topic that has appeared many times before, so despite their quality, they don't become a new classic. Generation focuses on a group of high school students and their complicated lives.
While the actors give solid performances and the story is relatable, it doesn't come up with anything that hasn't been done before. As a result, it gets somewhat lost among a large number of similar and more established shows, such as the British classic Skins.
3 The Irregulars
Netflix had major hits in the last two years but also some misses. The Irregulars belong to the second category. While it does take place in an attractive setting (Victorian London) and works with the topic of Sherlock Holmes, it fails to capture the charm and wit many Sherlock Holmes adaptations have.
A bit similar to Cursed, The Irregulars change the original story and it was a gamble that didn't work out. However, all those who enjoy Victorian London and historical crime series focused on young heroes might find the series interesting to watch.
2 Jupiter's Legacy
Another could-have-been-hit that didn't work out is the superhero show based on Mark Millar's comics. With eight episodes only, the series tries to connect the present days and the past, which doesn't always work out for the best.
It also has too many characters, which makes it more difficult to properly develop them. Even though superhero movies and TV shows are a popular genre, Jupiter's Legacy followed in the footsteps of Inhumans and was canceled early after its release.
1 Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist
Unlike a lot of 2020s shows that were already canceled, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist got two seasons, not just one. The musical drama works with an original idea. The main heroine, Zoey, gets the power to hear people's thoughts and feelings expressed in the form of musical numbers.
She has to navigate her newfound talent, her work, family, and love life. All fans of musicals will enjoy this show, which offers a lot of great songs as well as sympathetic characters played by talented actors.
