Although it's one of the newest AAA games to come out, someone has decided to wind the clocks back a couple of decades by turning The Callisto Protocol into a PS1-style game. With modern titles like Elden Ring also being given the demake treatment, there is evidently room in the wider gaming community to see what contemporary video games would look like if they had been released in a bygone era. The results are often an impressive image of just how far the industry has come over the years.

Although it's been a highly anticipated release, especially among the horror crowd, The Callisto Protocol is currently receiving mixed reviews. Perhaps the biggest gripe that many have with it are the stuttering issues, particularly on the PC version. Measures have been taken to rectify this, but it's no doubt left a number of fans feeling let down, given that the game has been on many people's watch lists for some time. However, there is an alternative out there, at least for viewing, particularly for those who remember the "good old days."

As seen by PCGamesN, modder and YouTuber Stark Crafts has released some footage from their fan demake of The Callisto Protocol, which was created using Unreal Engine and Blender. The footage shows the game in action, with an aesthetic that takes cues from the original PlayStation. With its blocky graphics and low-poly models, this unofficial version of the title looks like it would have been right at home in the mid-1990s. However, it doesn't look as though the project is available for download. Whether the modder will allow others to play their game cannot be said, but at least the video is interesting.

There's also a demake of Dead Space that someone else is working on, which is slightly amusing given that both that game and The Callisto Protocol share similar traits with regard to horror themes and gameplay mechanics. There is clearly something about turning a modern game into something more retro that's appealing to the fan base, and it's impressive that Stark Craft's demake has come out so soon after the official game launched.

As for Striking Distance Studios' maiden title, a day one patch for The Callisto Protocol was released to try and fix some of the aforementioned stuttering issues on PC. Not long after the game released, players began to review bomb it on Steam, leaving it at a "Mostly Negative" rating. Since then, this has been improved sightly and the game currently sits at "Mixed" on the PC storefront, so it's possible the rushed patch has rectified some of the problems at least.

The Callisto Protocol is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
