Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is seeing a massive influx of updates and additional content with the recent release of Firebase Z, and the highly anticipated open-world Zombies mode Outbreak dropping on February 25. The list of Zombies mode dreams-to-come-true doesn't stop there, as a recent rumor appears to hint at the development of a standalone Call of Duty Zombies video game.

Twitter user and longtime leaker Tom Henderson revealed that as of now, there is a separate Call of Duty Zombies project in the early stages of development. Furthermore, Henderson notes that this project is currently "not connected to any title," hinting at the possibility of a Call of Duty video game without any non-Zombies multiplayer or campaign elements.

Henderson doesn't go into too many details, but fans in the Zombies community have been clamoring for a standalone Call of Duty Zombies game for years, and with the reception to Outbreak weeks prior to being released, a standalone Zombies game could be an incredible offering to fans. With much of the focus being on the new content releasing just days from now, players likely won't know if these rumors are true or not any time soon, but they can hopefully feel confident that Treyarch is planning something for the future.

Dedicated fans of the series may recall that Treyarch attempted a similarly structured open-world map in the form of Black Ops 2's TranZit mode, which also featured multiple locations and hidden objectives to complete. Although reception to the map has somewhat improved over time, Treyarch is also showing it has the tools to give it another shot. As early as October 2020, Treyarch hinted at the Zombies map through an Easter egg.

Meanwhile, as the days tick down, Outbreak grows closer to reinventing the Zombies experience for players. A trailer dropped yesterday, revealing tons of gameplay as well as the numerous objectives available for players to complete. The official blog also hints at more content to come for the game mode, meaning that gamers will definitely be occupied with the undead hordes for a long time to come.

Black Ops Cold War is taking over as one of the most successful Call of Duty in the franchise, although fans of 2019's Modern Warfare haven't been left out to dry entirely. Courtesy of another frequent Call of Duty leaker, some of the details surrounding the content release of Modern Warfare Season 7 are circulating online as well.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
