An extremely resilient Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War player is on their way to an unprecedented record on a recently released map in the game’s beloved Zombie survival mode. Streaming the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War mode every day for over a week, they have crushed the map’s previous world record and are close to reaching its final round.

As part of its mid-season update, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War recently released its third map for the game mode, called Mauer Der Toten, which places players in a zombie-infested Berlin. Not long after, Call of Duty streamer InsomniaVirus, who has already reached round 1000 on Outbreak, began their quest to make it to the map’s final round. Since they began streaming their run on the new map, InsomniaVirus has put in over 105 hours in only 9 days, and has reached round 716, putting them well on their way to reaching round 935 – which is the highest round possible. Previously, the highest round reached on the new map was 474 – InsomniaVirus smashed that record in just about 55 hours.

The Zombies game mode has been a staple of the Call of Duty franchise, particularly those developed by Treyarch since the 2008 entry Call of Duty: World at War. As such, the set pieces and character designs in Mauer Der Toten’s downtown Berlin setting serve as a callback to that original “Nazi Zombies” game mode. Since 2008, the world of Call of Duty Zombies has only increased in popularity, with the series’ developers adding more complexity to the game mode through new weapons and increasingly expansive maps.

Since the map’s release, some players have complained about numerous visual and auditory bugs, including frequent freezing, silent zombies and cues, textures missing and a broken countdown timer. Though it appears that not everyone is experiencing these issues and it’s possible that some of them have been resolved by Treyarch, Insomnia themselves has been been dealing with lag and freezing on their more recent streams – most likely a result of them having the game going for several days and pushing it harder than the developers probably intended.

Despite issues with lag and freezes getting in the way of their legendary run, InsomniaVirus has shown tremendous poise and concentration as they use Molotovs and the War Machine to blow through hordes of zombies in the latter rounds. As the lag and freezing gets worse, the percentage of the map that is accessible to Insomnia shrinks and each round gets longer, but they have been patient and appear dedicated to reach the end. As their Mauer Der Toten video descriptions read: “it’s not over until you cross the finish line.” Those looking to witness Insomnia’s incredible feat can stay up to date with their streams on YouTube.
