While November and December are always high points for the gaming industry, it seems last December outdid itself, generating a total of $3.29 billion in revenue. Although this is mostly due to hardware sales of the Nintendo Switch, it is worth noting that Call of Duty: World War II and Star Wars: Battlefront II topped software sales for the month of December. It is no surprise that Call of Duty: WWII is in the number one position, but some may be surprised by Star Wars: Battlefront II’s number two spot.

These numbers represent the overall sales for video games last month, but it does not vary much by console. PlayStation 4’s top two sales were the aforementioned games, followed by NBA 2K18, Madden NFL 18, and Assassin’s Creed: Origins. Xbox One varies slightly from this model, with Call of Duty: WWII remaining in the first spot, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds taking the second spot, and being followed by Star Wars: Battlefront II, NBA 2K18, and Madden NFL 18.

Mat Piscatella, speaking for the industry-tracking firm The NPD Group that made this information available, said, “Call of Duty: WWII was the best-selling game in December, as well as for the year. December 2017 is the eighth consecutive December that a Call of Duty franchise release has topped the sales chart.”

What is interesting about these statistics is that it seems Star Wars: Battlefront 2 may be recovering from its microtransactions scandal. It is noteworthy that it may have been one of the most disappointing games of 2017, yet it managed to top the sales chart for one of the busiest months in the industry. While it doesn’t seem likely that this means EA has completely recovered its reputation, it may be a step forward.

While 2017 ended with a bang, 2018 is shaping up to be a good year for the Call of Duty franchise as well. It is set to release its first DLC, entitled The Resistance, at the end of this month. If December 2017 was any indication, Call of Duty: WWII will continue to be a fan-favorite in the upcoming months.

Call of Duty: World War II is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Resistance DLC will be available for PS4 on January 30.
