Call of Duty: Warzone has had many interesting events throughout its history, though one of the most memorable saw Zombies appearing in Verdansk. If a recent Call of Duty: Warzone teaser is to be believed, something similar could soon be happening soon.

Considering that Godzilla and Kong just appeared in Call of Duty: Warzone, bringing back Zombies would hardly be too outlandish for the hit battle royale game. However, it remains to be seen how they will be utilized. While the last appearance of the undead saw them roaming around a crashed ship before spreading to other parts of Verdansk, the event was divisive. Some players felt it took too long for the undead to spread, while others disliked having PvE elements in Warzone.

As pointed out by Reddit user lil_zoghi, the recent blog post breaking down Call of Duty: Warzone Season 4 seemingly teased the return of the undead. Described as an “undead surge” and “the ultimate test for Operators,” it certainly seems like a PvE approach will be taken with this upcoming Zombies content. However, there is another possibility, and it is one that would likely prove a lot more popular with those that disliked the previous Warzone Zombies event.

During the original Haunting event for Call of Duty: Warzone, the popular Zombie Royale game mode was released. This playlist proved to be an instant hit with the community, with players loving the concept of becoming Zombies when killed. In Zombie Royale, players gained unique abilities when zombified, and they had the ability to become human again by picking up cures from felled foes. With the goal of being the last human alive, the final fight was terrifying, as survivors were surrounded by dozens of player-controlled Zombies.

Still, while a Caldera-focused take on Zombie Royale could be fun, or even a Rebirth Island version of the mode, the “ultimate test” description makes that approach seem unlikely. Assuming that Zombies are instead used as PvE threats once the midseason update arrives, it will be interesting to see if they spread through the map slowly or are found in several other areas immediately. Further, another event like the Destruction of Verdansk could be on the table, as Caldera will soon be retired and replaced with the Warzone 2.0 map. Fans will likely get more info on this content a few weeks into Season 4.

For now, all Call of Duty: Warzone fans can do is speculate about the midseason update and how Zombies will be brought back to the game. No matter what Raven Software does with the undead, though, the community could end up split by the inclusion of Zombies once again.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
