After months of rumors, leaks, and speculation, Activision has finally announced Call of Duty: Warzone, a standalone free-to-play battle royale game co-developed by Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward and Raven Software. And luckily, Call of Duty fans don't have to wait long to get in on the action. As had been previously leaked, the Call of Duty: Warzone release date is Tuesday, March 10.

Call of Duty: Warzone does not require players to actually own 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It will be available as a separate, completely free download on all platforms, though those with Modern Warfare can still access it through that game's menus and will be able to play a few hours earlier. Call of Duty players that own Modern Warfare can expect to jump into Warzone around 8am PT on Tuesday, March 10, the time that the Modern Warfare Warzone timer is counting down to. Those without Modern Warfare will have to wait until 12pm PT to play the game.

The Call of Duty: Warzone announcement trailer confirms a lot of details about the game that were leaked ahead of its announcement. For example, Call of Duty: Warzone will support 150 players on a massive battle royale map. It will feature a slew of vehicles that players will be able to use to their advantage, and it will have two different kinds of game modes as well.

There will be a standard battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Warzone, but there will also be a mode called Plunder. Plunder will revolve around collecting cash on the battle royale map, though cash will be a factor in both game modes. Call of Duty: Warzone players will be able to use the cash to pay for killstreaks in the game as well as buy revive tokens. Players can also earn rewards through completing Contracts in-game.

As previously leaked, Call of Duty: Warzone shares progression with Modern Warfare. This means that players won't have to purchase a second Battle Pass to get the most out of the Warzone battle royale experience. This also means that players will be able to use the various multiplayer Operators that they have in the main game in Warzone, including popular characters like MW2's Simon "Ghost" Riley.

Now that Call of Duty: Warzone has been officially announced, it will be exciting to see if Infinity Ward is able to keep the fan base engaged with it long-term. The studio has done a great job of keeping Modern Warfare updated with new content, so it's likely that fans have nothing to worry about in that regard.

Call of Duty: Warzone launches on March 10 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
