Call of Duty: Warzone fans have been waiting patiently for a Verdansk replacement, as they have been playing on versions of the original map for over a year and a half. While the screenshots of the new Pacific Island map seem to indicate that the wait was worth it, the map’s setting might not be what Call of Duty: Warzone players were expecting.

Since the Pacific Island map was confirmed, everyone had assumed that it would be set in World War 2. With it coming alongside Call of Duty: Vanguard’s integration, this made perfect sense, as it would line up with what was done in the past. When integration with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War happened, both Rebirth Island and Verdansk 84 were added. As such, it would make sense if the map coming alongside Call of Duty: Vanguard matched its era.

According to a well-known Call of Duty leaker, though, this is not the case. Twitter user @BreadIsModding tweeted that the setting would be different, going on to quote themselves with another tweet that doubles down on the idea. While they provide no information on what setting the map will have, they do say that it comes from a good source and that they are “pretty confident” it is true. While it remains to be seen if the information will turn out to be legitimate, it is certainly interesting.

As for what setting fans can expect to see used for this new map, modern day is the most likely scenario. Similar to how World War 2 bunkers were added to Verdansk during Call of Duty: Warzone Season 6, players could be going to an area that was once used as a battlefield during the second World War. While it surely would have been abandoned by those that had fought there, equipment and vehicles could have been left behind, explaining why old gadgets and gear would be used by soldiers from the present day. They could be using what is around them, forced to survive with outdated resources.

While this would be a solid explanation for the inclusion of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s weapons alongside the Cold War and modern-era weaponry, there are still plot holes tied to the Operators. However, given that players could use characters like Captain Price and Gaz in Verdansk 84, Activision and Raven do not seem concerned about addressing that particular immersion issue. As such, Polina Petrova will likely be able to fight along characters from the 1980s and 2020s without issue.

With it seeming like a genuine possibility, players could be returning to a World War 2-themed island in the present day. For now, though, this is only speculation about an unconfirmed leak, so Call of Duty: Warzone fans should take the information with a grain of salt.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
