Call of Duty: Warzone is in a rough state at the moment. The game is full of bugs like the demon texture glitch, overpowered weapons like the Cooper Carbine, and cheaters using vehicles to kill their opponents. Playlist changes have frustrated gamers, Season 2 has been delayed, and even cosmetics like the Attack on Titan bundle have created controversy.

With so many problems, some players have made drastic suggestions for ways that the game could change. Some have suggested moving on from Caldera and bringing back Verdansk, while others have pushed for a full-on Call of Duty: Warzone sequel. While both of these things are unlikely to become a reality, it is clear that players are not happy with the state of the game and want to see some significant changes. One change that has not yet been suggested is the addition of NPCs, though there is a case to be made for the addition, as it could bring some freshness to the struggling battle royale game.

How NPCs Could Improve Call of Duty: Warzone

One of the most common criticisms about Caldera is that the map is boring, with content creators like TimTheTatman saying it “feels dead.” Some players have come up with their own points of interest for Caldera to help make it feel like the map has more going on, as the areas around the Volcano are essentially filled with empty space. However, NPCs are another valid solution to give the Pacific map some extra personality.

While Fortnite may not be for everyone, it is impossible to deny that the game has a lot of personality. Alongside building, NPCs are a big part of what makes the battle royale title unique. Players can find these characters in the named locations on Fortnite’s island, and they serve several purposes. Some can be hired to fight alongside players, some sell rare items, and others offer quests for Fortnite players to complete.

These same systems would work wonders in Call of Duty: Warzone, especially with the massive roster of Operators that the game could pull from. If NPCs were added to the game, players could find iconic characters like Captain Price or Frank Woods around the map. These characters could sell ammo alongside cheaper killstreaks like Cluster Strikes and UAVs, or offer special contracts that can be completed for massive amounts of XP and exclusive blueprints. Like in Fortnite, players could also spend money to hire the NPCs to accompany them as they move from circle to circle.

One Fortnite NPC feature that would translate particularly well to Call of Duty: Warzone is dueling. In Fortnite, players can challenge certain NPCs to a fight, with winters getting some strong loot from the AI enemy. A heavily armored version of Alex Mason could reward players with the special Redeemer pistol that he used in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign, for example, giving players a reason to take on an extra challenging fight. The addition of NPCs would instantly give players more to do during a match, and the AI characters could make seasonal events a lot more varied and interesting on top of that.

Obviously, not everyone would want to engage with NPCs if they came to Call of Duty: Warzone. As such, Raven Software would need to add a ranked playlist that strips away the NPCs and offers a traditional Call of Duty: Warzone experience. If the right steps are taken, NPCs coming to the game could be a good thing all around, making Caldera and the game as a whole a lot more memorable. While the feature is unlikely to ever come to the game, as no signs have indicated that NPCs are in the works, the addition of AI-controlled characters would instantly shake things up for a game that desperately needs some change.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
