The original Call of Duty: Warzone could be getting a new name, according to a reputable leaker. Activision launched the original Call of Duty: Warzone battle royale game in 2020, and it has continued to support it ever since with a constant stream of content updates. However, attention is soon going to be shifting away from the original Call of Duty: Warzone, as its sequel is set to launch in the relatively near future.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is expected to launch in November, with a leaked internal document specifically mentioning a November 16 release date. It remains to be seen if that will indeed be the date that the BR launches on, but fans could find out as early as next week. Call of Duty: Warzone 2 will be at the Call of Duty Next event, scheduled to take place on September 15 at 10am PT. Activision has confirmed Call of Duty: Warzone 2 for the event, along with Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, but it remains to be seen if fans will get a release date announcement or just their first look at the game.
With Call of Duty: Warzone 2 set to launch within the next couple of months, one would think that Activision would abandon or replace the original Warzone entirely. However, according to reputable Call of Duty leaker Tom Henderson, the original Warzone will apparently continue to receive updates after its sequel launches. Not only that, but it's said to be getting a name change as well, with Activision reportedly renaming it to Warzone Caldera starting November 28. For the uninitiated, this would essentially be naming the game after its Caldera map.
The November 28 date is interesting. It's possible that is also the same day that Call of Duty: Warzone 2 launches and the previously leaked November 16 date is incorrect, but it's also possible that is just the day that Activision is going to change the first game's name. One claim in the leaked Activision document, the December 8 date for The Game Awards, has already been proven accurate, so it will definitely be interesting see what the Warzone 2 launch date ends up being.
If Warzone 2 comes out on November 28 instead of November 16, that would put it exactly one month out from the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Perhaps Activision wants to give Modern Warfare 2 a full month to breathe before dropping Warzone 2, but that's just speculation at this time. Fans will want to tune in to Call of Duty Next on September 15 at 10am PT to get a clearer picture of the franchise's future.
