With Season 5 of Call of Duty: Warzone well and truly underway, players have been experiencing the host of the new features the update added. The addition of new perks, new operators, and a number of bug fixes have all been welcome alterations to Warzone's gameplay. However, some players have noted that other features have been put on the backburner by Raven Software, with mysterious closed-off mine tunnels being notable points of interest for fans.

New season patches often come with a few mysteries attached, such as Warzone's mobile broadcast stations and their curious transmissions. Often, these mysteries resolve themselves relatively quickly, with Raven Software usually using these puzzles as part of a specific revelatory change to the Warzone game space. The mine tunnels are an exception, however, as they were added to the map with Season 3's Verdansk 84 update, and there has been little word from Raven regarding the mines, aside from saying that they will open at some point in the future.

In the past, Warzone featured Bunkers locked with codes, which were revealed in Season 2, allowing players access. In a recent thread on Reddit, users pointed out that the mines seemed to have been all but forgotten by the Warzone developers, as, unlike the Bunkers, access to the areas is still blocked off. There are two main sets of mine tunnels in Verdansk, with one located north of the Airport, and another around the Salt Mines. Players have managed to clip into the Old Mine, located near the Airport, in the past, exploring its eerie tunnels and discerning little about its actual purpose. However, the tunnels that weave through the Salt Mines are notably larger, and little is known about them.

With a new map coming to Warzone with the release of Call of Duty Vanguard, players have begun speculating that the mines could be tied into the coinciding update. In the case of the Old Mine, it is specifically referenced as a point of interest in the official Call of Duty: Warzone strategy guide, meaning that it seems reasonable to assume that Raven Software has always meant to do something with the location. Many had assumed that the mines would be associated with the red door travel system added to Warzone in Season 4, however this was not the case, and even with red doors updated in Season 5, the mines remain as mysterious as ever.

Considering the huge set-pieces involved in large updates, such as the explosive destruction of Warzone's train, it seems likely that players can expect something of similar scale when the purpose of Verdansk's mines is finally revealed. While many assume that these mines have been abandoned not only in-game, but by Raven Software, the Warzone developers are known for setting up mysteries that bear fruit later, so perhaps players will just have to be patient.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
