After launching Call of Duty: Warzone, Infinity Ward attempted to create something a little different that would stand out from other popular Battle Royale games like Apex Legends and Fortnite. The the objectives remain the same, trying to outlive all other teams and players, Infinity Ward added in things to help it stand out with a big piece of that being the Gulag when a player is eliminated for the first time. Another method to help differentiate it is the continued story line from the other two parts of the game.

In a recent interview, Infinity Ward's narrative director Taylor Kurosaki revealed how the studio plans to keep evolving the story from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign into the Battle Royale mode Warzone.

So far, Infinity Ward has loosely tied the narrative through the in-game cinematic for each season. For example, when season two finally arrived and reintroduced Modern Warfare 2 protagonist Ghost, the cinematic showed him investigating the events transpiring in Verdansk and eventually requesting backup from Captain Price. A few weeks back during the launch of season 3, the cinematic continued showing Ghost's investigation and when he found himself in a tough spot, that backup he asked fro finally arrived with Alex joining in.

Kurosaki confirmed that these seasonal cinematics will continue to push the story along in future seasons, though the studio is also planning Fortnite style events that will impact the story and mode. When compared to the Blackhole event that essentially shut Fortnite off for a few days, Kurosaki admitted that Warzone likely won't see anything that drastic as the events are more smaller in scale.

Without getting into too much detail, the team is working on events more similar to the Fortnite eclipse, things that impact more of the world and the characters inhabiting it. Warzone technically takes place after the Modern Warfare campaign, where the chaos that resulted from the East vs West battle has essentially turned into a situation filled with distrust where everyone fights everyone regardless of which side they represent. Instead of having a game with three standalone modes, Infinity Ward is attempting to tie all of them together through narrative.

It's unknown when exactly more of these story specific events will begin to appear in game, though it looks like Infinity Ward will have plenty of players hungry to see what's next. Earlier this month, Infinity Ward announced that Warzone has passed over 50 million players dropping in. With continued improvements, constant updates, as well as the fact that a global pandemic has forced the majority of people to stay home, that number isn't likely to decrease any time soon.

Call of Duty: Warzone is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
