Call of Duty: Warzone is one of the success stories of 2020. While the Call of Duty series dipped its toes into battle royale with Black Out on Black Ops 4, the free-to-play model of Warzone with a brand new engine combined for huge download numbers in the Spring when it launched. And the triumph has continued through the Summer and into the Fall. Now the game looks to continue to grow and expand, as a new map may be on the way very soon.

Since Warzone launched, the map has seen small changes here and there, like the stadium finally opening up. But many have been hoping for a brand new map, and rumors have pointed to that for months. While Warzone launched as a standalone game, it also is built to be played inside of/alongside Modern Warfare. And the new Call of Duty game, Black Ops Cold War, will also see Warzone implementation.

Datamined images have been found and posted on Resetera by Kalenten. For those who have been paying attention to Black Ops Cold War multiplayer news, or for those who have enjoyed the Cold War beta, the images may look familiar. Indeed they are from Cold War multiplayer, and specifically from the new Fireteam game modes. But the name of the images, according to the datamined info, point to the usage of "WZ," which would indicate that it is a Warzone map.

The images are named "wz_forest_ftdboutro," "wz_ski_slopes_ftdboutro," and "wz_ski_slopes_loadingmovie." Although each image looks distinct, it would be easy to see them all fitting together in one large map, with snowy areas closer to the mountain and lush forests closer to the riverbed. The ski slope image looks like it is taken directly out of Alpine, one of the maps available in the Black Ops Cold War beta.

In Modern Warfare, multiplayer and spec ops locations are used to make up the Warzone map. So it is perfectly reasonable to think that the maps that are used for the new 40-player, 4-man team Fireteam modes in Black Ops Cold War would be pieced together to create the Warzone map for Cold War.

The images themselves are exciting. And the "WZ" annotation certainly makes it intriguing. From most accounts, it looks like the battle royale won't see drastic changes to the successful formula, but will still get its own Black Ops flare for Warzone, perhaps with Zombies. If the general premise stays the same, it makes a lot of sense for the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer maps to mesh together to create a larger grand-scale Warzone map.
