Developers at Activision Blizzard have confirmed Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 for release later this year and that the existing Warzone experience will remain next to it for the foreseeable future. Because Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 will exist simultaneously with the original Warzone, players will be able to hop in and out of whichever version they see fit.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 leaks have been drip-fed for a while, but the game has been officially confirmed with a reveal trailer detailing aspects of the game, including stealthy campaign missions and potential weapons in the latest arsenal. Not to be left out, the popular Call of Duty: Warzone battle royale also received big news alongside the announcement as Warzone 2.0 has also been confirmed. Unlike its regular changes through the previous Call of Duty releases, Call of Duty: Warzone will be getting a full sequel around the release of Modern Warfare 2.

Activision Blizzard has confirmed that Warzone 2.0 will launch shortly after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and it will be an extension of the Modern Warfare 2 universe like Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera was an extension of the Vanguard universe. This means that even though Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 will be a new stand-alone experience, it will match the relevant Call of Duty just like previous iterations of the original Warzone. Call of Duty fans that have been frustrated by cheaters for the launch of older Warzone updates may delight in the fact that Ricochet anti-cheat is promised for day one.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is being teased to feature new Modern Warfare 2 content and systems which may be expected as a reflection of the upcoming title, but it will also offer brand-new progression and inventories. The classic Warzone experience will still be available for players that don't adapt to Warzone 2.0 which means Call of Duty players that don't enjoy the changes can return to the progression and inventories included in the original client. Because Call of Duty titles are often downloaded piece by piece in recent releases, it's likely that some Warzone fans wind up with both versions on their console or PC.

The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will see Call of Duty return to Steam on PC which may suggest that Warzone 2.0 will be available on the storefront when it launches shortly afterward. All the big changes coming with Warzone 2.0 haven't been revealed by Activision Blizzard, so it's currently unclear what battle royale fans can expect from the game. Because there are a few months leading to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 coming out, Activision Blizzard may reveal more about Warzone 2.0 as October gets closer.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
