DMZ players in Call of Duty: Warzone 2 are taking issue with the decision to reset progress with the start of Season 2. The DMZ mode in Warzone 2 is, much like other Escape From Tarkov-like modes and games, intended to be played with seasonal resets. However, many DMZ players appear to either not have known that before starting playing, or think that issues in Call of Duty: Warzone 2's first season should take precedence over a full reset.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2's DMZ mode involves multiplayer gameplay built around permanent loot loss. If players die, they lose their loot. If they survive, they can take what they've found back with them. However, there are certain things that can be permanently earned -- like "insurance" slots that allow gamers to keep loot even after death. Earning these things in DMZ mode can be difficult and slow, and it's easy to imagine a Call of Duty: Warzone 2 player being frustrated at the idea of losing them.

This past week, Call of Duty news account CharlieIntel confirmed reports that on February 15, with the start of Season 2, insured weapon slots in DMZ would be reset. That's in addition to faction tiers, mission progress, and earned keys and contraband. Season 2 will be introducing new missions and other significant changes to DMZ mode, making progress in Season 1 perhaps unbalanced compared to progress in Season 2. The reset is expected, as it's common in Escape from Tarkov and similar games.

Still, Call of Duty: Warzone 2 players who have spent time in DMZ aren't necessarily happy with the decision. A thread on Reddit includes comments frustrated that they spent so much time grinding, anger at frustrating missions necessary for rewards that will no longer be of use, and similar concerns. Many players say they won't play DMZ again until the server reset, if then.

One thing that's important to note about the situation is that DMZ mode is technically in beta testing. Escape from Tarkov has similarly been labeled as in beta since it launched, allowing its developers to make frequent changes and reset progress. It seems odd for Warzone 2, but DMZ mode is receiving significant amounts of criticism and feedback that will hopefully be addressed between seasons.

What seems to be the deeper issue here is that many DMZ players were simply not told that there were likely to be progress resets between seasons. If Activision had done its due diligence and made this clear from the start, perhaps putting a warning in DMZ's opening menus, this frustration could have been averted. That's something else Activision will hopefully take into account when Season 2 starts in February.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
