Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies fans have known for some time now that Treyarch would be making a shift to round-based content for the game’s final Zombies maps, and on June 22, the first round-based map will be released. When Call of Duty: Vanguard players hop into a match, they will be able to wield the Wunderwaffe DG-2.

With a Shi No Numa remake set to be the first full round-based map in Call of Duty: Vanguard, it is fitting that the Wunderwaffe DG-2 will serve as its Wonder Weapon. This is because the Wunderwaffe was first introduced during Shi No Numa, the third map released for Call of Duty Zombies. As longtime fans will know, the weapon shoots bolts of electricity that chain between groups of undead, allowing players to wipe out an entire train with a single shot.

Confirmation that the Wunderwaffe DG-2 would be returning came via an official Tweet from Treyarch, and it resembles previous Wonder Weapon teasers like the one for the RAI K-84. The image attached to the post shows the Wunderwaffe in all its glory, confirming that it will keep its same design and functionality. Alongside some neat breakdowns of the weapon’s various parts, a new origin story for the Wunderwaffe DG-2 was confirmed.

In the original Aether continuity, it was Dr. Edward Richtofen that created the Wunderwaffe DG-2. However, in the new Dark Aether universe, the gun was actually made by Dr. Vogel, a key figure in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War map Die Maschine. More specifically, Vogel crafted the weapon using plans from Dr. Strauss. Considering that the Dark Aether story’s version of Richtofen is very different from the versions seen in the previous narrative, this is a smart change.

Overall, the Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies community seems split on the introduction of the Wunderwaffe. While some adore the iconic weapon and cannot wait to wield it in the latest iteration of Zombies, others are tired of seeing remastered content instead of something brand-new. Considering that Call of Duty:Vanguard's first round-based release is an old map, and that the Wonder Weapon is also something fans have seen many times, this disappointment is understandable. Still, having a version of Shi No Numa without the Wunderwaffe might have felt strange, so Treyarch was essentially caught between a rock and a hard place.

Regardless of how players feel about the remade content, Shi No Numa’s release is just days away. With big things planned for Call of Duty Zombies’ future, hopefully the map is able to get some players interested in the mode once again, even if some fans are not thrilled about fighting through a swamp with the Wunderwaffe DG-2 yet again.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
