Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies is proving to be controversial, and it seems like Treyarch is aware of this. Fortunately, recent comments from the developer indicate that Call of Duty: Vanguard content aimed more at round-based players is currently in the works.

While Der Anfang taking a risk is welcome, as a major reason Call of Duty Zombies has thrived since 2008 is the mode’s innovation, it is easy to understand why fans are concerned. While the latest Zombies mode does feature Shi No Numa as a play space that should please nostalgic players, it is not a Survival map. Instead, Der Anfang is objective-focused, with players teleporting between zones to complete different tasks.

Obviously, this is a lot like a more focused and small-scale version Outbreak mode, and Treyarch addressed the change directly in an interview with Gamespot. According to Gavin Locke, an associate director of design, the mode can also be viewed as a “stripped down” version of the round-based experience. Players will still be opening the map using points and the undead will still get harder to fight as the match goes on, but players will be earning their points via the completion of objectives instead of just surviving rounds.

Obviously, this answer is unlikely to satisfy longtime Call of Duty Zombies fans, though part of the follow-up response might. According to creative specialist Miles Leslie, the new mode is a hybrid of round-based and Outbreak, and it has the goal of “getting you to the action faster.” More importantly, round-based players will be “satisfied” with the post-launch approach. In Leslie’s words, “round-based as you know it might get worked into some other mechanics.” While the developer does not want to give much away, he does make it clear that Treyarch is “not forgetting the RBZ fans” with Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies.

While this does seemingly back up the claims that a round-based Zombies map will be coming after launch, fans may want to lower their expectations. Not only does the first Call of Duty: Vanguard roadmap go against the idea of a Survival map coming in Season 1 like the early leaks had suggested, but Leslie’s wording makes it sound like a proper round-based map is not actually on the way. Instead, it sounds like players will see a round-based objective type of some kind added to Der Anfang, letting them survive in the hub area or one of the smaller locations.

While it is good news that content aimed at round-based players is coming, it might not be a proper map like many were hoping for. With Der Anfang’s easter egg also not coming until after Season 1, it is clearly going to be a very different year for Zombies.

Call of Duty: Vanguard launches November 5 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
