Call of Duty: World at War was the first title in the series to offer the Zombies game mode and since then, it has become a big hit with a portion of the series' community. Treyarch is staying true to its Zombies roots with Call of Duty: Vanguard, continuing the Dark Aether narrative that the team set with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Vanguard's Zombies game mode also crosses over with the campaign in a way that's never been seen before.

The Dark Aether storyline reaches new heights in Call of Duty: Vanguard as Der Anfang is a new beginning to the multi-title storyline. According to Treyarch, the events of Black Ops Cold War brought an end to one Dark Aether storyline and Vanguard represents a fresh start. Like previous titles, Der Anfang will focus on the mystical and occult themes with a brutal environment to explore as Vanguard players survive wave after wave of Zombies, Boom Schriers, Hellhounds, Sturmkriegers, and more.

Call of Duty: Vanguard includes various game modes in Zombies such as Blitz, Harvest, and Transmit. Blitz is like similarly named game modes where players will want to accomplish their goals as quickly as possible. Harvest tasks Vanguard players with collecting rune stones in order to deposit them into an obelisk called the "Sin Eater." Transmit sees Zombies fans escorting a floating zombie head that is looking for weaknesses in the Dark Aether.

Call of Duty: Vanguard's Zombies has a new mechanic known as Dark Aether rune magic and according to Treyarch, it's how the Dark Aether entities manifest their powers. Vanguard's advanced progression system extends from Multiplayer to Zombies, allowing players to increase their rank, seasonal battle pass level, and weapon level. Zombies fans will be familiar with the Crafting Table, perks, portals, and power-ups returning from previous titles, but Treyarch promises a unique experience in Vanguard.

Call of Duty: Vanguard releases for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
