The season 3 content afforded to players of Activision and Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Vanguard was relatively sparse; most of the season’s most interesting new additions were introduced to the popular battle royale spin-off Call of Duty: Warzone, while the most current mainline title received little more than two new multiplayer maps and a wildly controversial Godzilla-themed operator skin. This trend may change in Call of Duty: Vanguard’s upcoming season 4, the intro cinematic for which just debuted.

The brief cutscene features a skirmish between forces led by Arthur Kingsley, who was featured in the Call of Duty: Vanguard campaign, and Carver Butcher, a character made more recognizable through the game’s post-launch content. While few players are likely to keep up with the story elements of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s seasonal updates, fans were quick to spot issues with the trailer. Most notably, Kingsley and Butcher engage in a firefight in a clearing, yet, despite the fact that they can’t be more than two dozen yards away from one another, nobody on either squad manages to land a single shot.

Of course, the opening cinematic isn’t something for which Call of Duty: Vanguard fans play the game. While the season 4 cutscene offers very little in the way of information regarding new content—save perhaps for the fact that Carver Butcher may serve as a playable operator—a second trailer uploaded to the official Call of Duty YouTube channel offers a preview of Fortune’s Keep, a new island to be added to Call of Duty: Warzone’s Caldera map.

However, the most significant news concerning Call of Duty: Vanguard’s forthcoming fourth major update has to do with the game’s Zombies component. Zombies was neglected entirely during season 3 save for the addition of a few new weapons, and rumors circulated that Treyarch may have either abandoned the mode entirely or opted to move away from the objective-based game modes it had previously prioritized. Indeed, the latter proved to be true, as season 4 will see the addition of a traditional round-based map in the form of Shi No Numa.

A legacy Call of Duty Zombies map that was first introduced all the way back in 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War, Shi No Numa also played a role in Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Zombies mode. However, launching alongside the rest of the season 4 content on June 22, players will be able to explore a fully-remastered map with new areas, weapons, quests, and Easter eggs. On the whole, post-launch content for Call of Duty: Vanguard continues to be a bit sparse, though this will at least be a boon for Zombies fans.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
