Call of Duty: Vanguard was released earlier this year, following a decidedly mixed reaction to its multiplayer betas. While Call of Duty: Vanguard hasn’t been the biggest of success stories commercially, fans have enjoyed the return of a World War 2 setting to the Call of Duty series. This has led to a number of classic weapons and maps coming back, which has been great for fans’ nostalgia.

In particular, the return of some of the more popular weapons and maps from Call of Duty: World at War’s multiplayer has been well received. Maps such as Castle and Dome remain firm fan favorites in their latest appearance, while the StG 44 has been one of the more popular weapons in Call of Duty: Vanguard. Another popular weapon in Call of Duty: Vanguard has been the SVT-40, which stands out among other weapons of its kind.

The SVT-40 is one of the many Call of Duty: Vanguard weapons available to players. The weapon featured prominently in Call of Duty: World at War and World War 2, standing as a popular weapon choice in each. The majority of Vanguard’s weapons will be familiar to longtime Call of Duty fans, but not all are quite such a popular choice as the SVT-40. It has the greatest firepower out of all of the marksman rifles in Vanguard, a stat that makes it stand out from the rest of the game’s weapons. Another weapon in the M1 Garand has also been popular for its icon status, although it may not be quite as useful as the SVT-40.

What makes the SVT-40 one of the best weapons in Call of Duty: Vanguard is the fact that players can hit one shot kills with it despite being a semi-automatic marksman rifle. On a base level, it can already land one-shot kills with a well-placed shot. The SVT-40 is effective with headshots, making it comparable to sniper rifles more so than other marksman rifles, particularly when in the hands of someone with good accuracy. However, the issue with not just the SVT-40, but all of the marksman rifles, is the ammo capacity. The SVT-40 has three mags of 10 rounds, which players can get through in a hurry if they aren’t conservative with their usage. This is a fairly minor issue that can be easily resolved, though, and shouldn’t stop players from using the gun.

As with all weapons in the game, dipping into Call of Duty: Vanguard’s gunsmith can be a great way to upgrade upon the SVT-40’s base attributes. Given the SVT-40’s closeness to some of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s sniper rifles, it may be best to lean into this fact. The weapon is already capable of one-shot kills, but this can be taken to another level with some carefully picked attachments. Players may also want to upgrade the magazine capacity of the gun, the 7.62X54MMR 15 Round Mags are a good choice, although this will come with downgrades in other areas such as ADS and movement speed.

Unfortunately, none of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s operators have the SVT-40 as their favorite weapon, which means there aren’t any XP bonuses to have. The Kovalevskaya 800MM B03 barrel and Vital proficiency will each increase effective hit areas, making it slightly more deadly in other areas apart from the head. As such, these are two vital attachments to have, but aside from this, players should equip the Heavy Foregrip and Taped Grip for improved accuracy to make those headshots that much easier to come by. A scope is optional, although for players who want a weapon to compete with a sniper it may be a key attachment. The SVT-40 should be a formidable weapon with these attachments.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
