Call of Duty: Vanguard developers address much-requested changes to ranked play from players, such as adding punishments for those who leave their team hanging in the middle of a firefight. This issue has been the Achilles' Heel of the franchise, and developers now have a plan for it.

In competitive gaming, teammates who quit during a match can potentially ruin any experience, and in Call of Duty, it is a common complaint. Developer Treyarch plans to enact penalties on players who do this, confirming this for Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Competitive ranked play is a seasonal game mode presented in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: WW2, and now Call of Duty: Vanguard as the beta launched recently on February 18. It is similar to the League Play mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, with players pairing via skill level. However, players still need to unlock what they need to rank up in ranked play. The common grievance that teammates leave mid-match derives from bailing because the enemy team may have the upper hand and would instead not aim to turn things around. A comment made on Twitter from a ranked player is that he's noticed players bailing on their team to play with someone on their friend's list instead.

Possibly, players leaving the match may be a massive hit to their team's win, depending on the skills of the player that left. Regardless, leaving a team vulnerable during a 4v4 match by knocking it down to a 3v4 or 2v4 is unjust. Game designer Lawrence Metten confirmed on Twitter that "disconnected penalties are coming." He also stated that "We're also discussing supplemental SR adjustments for players that we know are intentionally leaving matches," which is a relief for players looking for an equal shot in ranked play. Metten agreed that this feature should have been in the game mode from launch, but the problem will be rectified sooner than later.

Metten remarked that the Treyarch team had good discussions regarding players gaining or losing their skill rating or "SR" and what adjustments or restrictions can be made for Call of Duty: Vanguard in this area. He added that the game's Elo system focuses on the player's skills and performance based on the data received. Players can gain or lose SR based on how many wins or losses they have, and now it seems a penalty will be added for departing a match early, which in all fairness, is a good thing.

Hopefully, a well-adjusted solution will come about as Treyarch discusses further changes to Call of Duty: Vanguard's ranked play mode. It's nice to know that Call of Duty: Vanguard fan complaints and suggestions are being acknowledged and can be addressed shortly as devs constantly look for solutions.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.
