While Call of Duty: Vanguard has certainly had a smoother launch than Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War did last year, it has still had its fair share of problems. That shows clearly through a new Call of Duty: Vanguard bug that sees menus popping up when players least expect, distracting them from what is going on inside the match.

One of the better improvements seen in the last few Call of Duty games is the ability to adjust loadouts in the pause screen. This allows players to test out attachments in live matches or swap out a perk that is not right for the current situation, which is a vast improvement over being stuck with a class for the entirety of the match. However, while this menu option is normally great, it becomes a lot less positive when the screen randomly appears inside a match.

That is exactly what happened to Call of Duty: Vanguard player and Reddit user SantaClaws514. As mentioned in the post title, they were doing well in their match and were on a big streak, something that shows clearly when they quickly eliminate an opponent. However, as soon as they pick up this kill, the Redditor is sent to the custom class screen. Caught off guard by the change and not able to fire their weapon, they are killed while exiting this forced menu screen.

Sadly, this bug is likely to happen in other Call of Duty: Vanguard matches for those impacted by it, as SantaClaws514 confirms it happens to them “once every game.” In the comments, several players chimed in to say that the bug is happening to them as well. Intriguingly, these commenters point out that they were playing on different platforms, so it seems like it is a larger UI problem as opposed to an issue with one specific console. On the bright side, if players are expecting it, they should be able to exit out quickly.

As of now, it is unclear what is causing this Call of Duty: Vanguard bug to happen. Some Redditors are arguing that there is a change loadout button players are accidentally pressing, which can be turned off through the settings menu. Others, like CaptainSnazzypants, believe the issue could be tied to leveling up, as it happened to them as soon as they prestiged. Regardless, it is clear that a lot of players are dealing with this issue, so hopefully a fix will come soon.

A recent Call of Duty: Vanguard patch fixed bugs tied to challenge tracking and the Combat Shield, so Sledgehammer Games is clearly hard at work on fixing the issues the community points out. As such, it is likely only a matter of time before this problem is dealt with as well.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
