A couple days ago, Activision and Treyarch revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be getting a battle royale mode entitled "Blackout," promising that the experience will be unique for the increasingly popular game mode. While exact details are currently unknown, it seems possible more about Blackout will be revealed at E3, although if it'll have a presence is unknown at this time.

With the introduction of this battle royale mode, Black Ops 4 joins PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite in the battle royale community. While it remains to be seen if Blackout proves to be as popular as the aforementioned games, it does seem likely given the popularity of the Call of Duty franchise, and it seems that PLAYERUNKNOWN himself has welcomed the franchise into the fold.

As seen in the tweet below, PLAYERUNKNOWN tweeted at Call of Duty, welcoming the company into the club. Considering the intense rivalry between PUBG and Fortnite, it'll be interesting to see how Call of Duty shakes up the ongoing "whose battle royale mode is better" debate.

Of course, some gamers may be feeling like there is an overload of the battle royale genre in the market. It's worth mentioning that Cliffy B's Boss Key Productions is shutting down after trying to enter the battle royale market with Radical Heights, which lost 82% of its player base in just two weeks. That's not to say, however, that battle royale is losing any momentum; matter of fact, it's quite the opposite, as evidenced by the feedback of the longstanding Black Ops franchise's entrance into the genre.

One arena that Black Ops 4, Fortnite, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will likely go head-to-head is on Twitch where battle royale streams remain prominent. As of two months ago, Fortnite surpassed PUBG as the most watched and streamed on the streaming service, with Fortnite being watched for a total of 4,000+ years and streamed for 240+ years. When Black Ops 4 launches, it'll be interesting to see how and if Blackout shakes up these statistics.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases October 12 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
