While most members of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 community are continuing the argument against skill-based matchmaking, some are focused on a different issue. Instead of blaming Call of Duty's matchmaking system for constantly putting them against opponents of a higher skill level, this group is focused on their teammates. In particular, they are frustrated by how their team does nothing to help with the objective and cares little about winning matches.

This is a series-wide issue that is by no means limited to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as it has been going on for years. Unfortunately, Call of Duty’s approach to camo challenges and several years’ worth of highlighting kill/death ratio statistics has made a large portion of the community selfish, ruining the fun for those that want to win. Hopefully, future Call of Duty games will finally shift the focus to reward gamers for teamwork and victories, getting objective players some much-needed help.

Why Objective Players Are Annoyed With Their Call of Duty Teammates

For those who prioritize winning, it is hard to think of something more frustrating than having multiple captures in Domination or two minutes of objective time in Hardpoint only to come up short because the rest of the team stood idly by. Sadly, objective players are a rare breed in Call of Duty, with many finding it more fun to have the most kills on the scoreboard. Others are only concerned about grinding camos, which makes sense given how stunning Orion camo is.

One of the most common criticisms objective players have is that if gamers do not want to try to help capture points or flags, they should just play Team Deathmatch. However, the counterpoint to this belief is that it is easier to have high-kill games in objective modes, as slayers know gamers will be around Domination flags or bomb sites. This extends to camo hunting, as players do not have to worry about searching for campers in Team Deathmatch. While it would be for the best if only players that wanted to win engaged with objective modes, that will likely never happen.

Though the addition of Ranked Play to Modern Warfare 2 will help a bit, objectives players should not have to suffer through getting no help with the release of each new game. Going forward, the developers should start to shift the focus of rewards, something that could help players try to win more often in their matches. Though some will surely still prioritize themselves over the team, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer could mitigate the problem by coming up with ways to trick selfish players into contributing.

How Call of Duty Can Motivate Gamers To Work Together

Call of Duty’s camo challenges are the most obvious place to look for forms of encouragement, as challenges like mounted kills could be traded out for flag captures. Players could unlock a camo for a weapon by capturing 4 flags in one match with said weapon equipped, or getting a minute of Hardpoint time with the weapon held out. Because camo challenges are all about kills, players that want the mastery designs are only focusing on eliminations during their grind. Adding tasks like “secure two objectives in the same life” could go a long way to forcing players to help their win-focused allies.

If players are not focused on the camo grind, they could be working on Prestiging in Call of Duty. This is another area where the developers can incentivize objective play, as gamers could get large win and win streak bonuses. For those looking to reach the max season level as fast as possible, the speediest route to the top could be winning multiplayer games, pushing players to think a bit more about going for wins. Though there will always be players who have more fun raising their K/D ratios than their W/L stats, getting the camo hunters and Prestige lovers to play the objective more would make a massive difference.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
