Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been a resurgence for the Call of Duty brand. Activision recently confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sales are up by a "double-digit percentage" and microtransaction sales are increasing in parallel. It's understandable then that Activision sees additional value in the Modern Warfare series, and the company has now indicated that it's working on spin-offs.

As reported by SeekingAlpha, Activision COO and President Coddy Johnson confirmed plans for Modern Warfare spin-offs in a recent quarterly financial call. According to Johnson, the Call of Duty franchise "has never been better positioned for growth," and Activision plans to capitalize while things are going well. Johnson says that "entirely new experiences within the Modern Warfare universe" are coming soon.

Johnson doesn't elaborate on Activision's plans for Modern Warfare, of course. These "new experiences" will be announced as Activision and its respective studios are ready to bring them to the public.

The one poorly kept secret rumored to be in development is a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare battle royale title, developed by Raven Software. Early rumors indicated that it would be a 200-player battle royale and that it would launch in late January, either in Modern Warfare itself or as a standalone release. That obviously didn't happen, but fans are still hoping for news about the battle royale soon. With Modern Warfare Season 2 starting soon, however, another announcement in the relatively near future doesn't seem likely.

As for what other spin-offs Activision might be planning, it's a mystery. If Johnson had said specifically that Activision was working on a single "new experience," rather than use the plural, that would be plainly understood. Since he did refer to multiple experiences, Call of Duty fans can't help but wonder what else might be in the works. It's especially surprising, since there's supposed to be a brand new Call of Duty game released later this year. Any other Modern Warfare spin-offs would have to be released in the time between.

For now, Activision is focused on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its upcoming Season 2 release, as well as the new Call of Duty game planned for late 2020. It very much sounds like the time between now and late 2020 will be filled with more Modern Warfare content. That may or may not include the rumored Modern Warfare battle royale, which may or may not be released as a standalone or even free-to-play game. There's a lot to look forward to for Call of Duty fans, clearly.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
