One of the biggest things that Activision has hyped about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been the fact that Modern Warfare is ditching the paid season passes of previous games and adopting a seasonal model of free post-launch content drops. Now that the launch period is winding down, the publisher has finally announced when it is going to get the game’s first season underway, and it’s going to be very soon.

We’ve known for a few weeks now that Season 1 of Modern Warfare would kick off sometime in December, though it wasn’t clear if it would be earlier or later in the month. Turns out it’s earlier, because Activision has confirmed that the first season will begin next Tuesday, December 3. In the process, it laid out the roadmap for what new content will be added to the game, while stressing that all of that content will be available to all players on all platforms simultaneously.

The “biggest free content drop in Call of Duty history” will, as that implies, introduce a sizable amount of new multiplayer maps and modes at no extra charge. Map-wise, Season 1 will see the addition of three classic standard maps from the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: Crash, Vacant, and Shipment (which will also be playable in Gunfight). Joining them will be a new Ground War map, Port, and two new Gunfight maps, Cargo and Atrium.

As for modes, players will be able to able to jump into some notable modes from past COD games, like Reinforce (where downed players can only be revived by teammates capturing zones around the map) and Infected (where one player starts off trying to “infect” everyone else while the “survivors” try to avoid infection). Activision also confirmed that the Gunfight OSP variation that was available in Modern Warfare’s alpha test will be added to the game proper during Season 1. Rounding things off will be four new Spec Ops missions: Bomb Squad, Grounded, Pitch Black, and Just Reward.

And all that’s just the stuff Activision has revealed so far. According to the publisher, there will be more in the way of maps, modes, and Spec Ops content added to the game as Season 1 goes on. Then there’s Modern Warfare’s Battle Pass, which, while not completely free like everything else, will still allow all players to unlock some free content, including two new weapons in the form of the Ram-7 Assault Rifle and Holger-26 LMG.

Although all of the content mentioned by name will be likely be there when Season 1 begins on December 3, Activision noted that some of it may end up being added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare later on in the Season. It didn’t go into specifics, but it did state that more information on Season 1, as well as the Battle Pass and its 100 tiers, will be revealed next week.
