Activision and Infinity Ward are getting ready to share more information about 2019's Call of Duty multiplayer plans coming in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Today the confirmation came through that the "multiplayer universe" of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be unveiled in a special livestream event on August 1.

The unveiling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer universe will come on August 1. A specific time wasn't provided, but Infinity Ward promises that fans can expect a "comprehensive, epic, and suitably bombastic" reveal with a deep look at gameplay. Specific features mentioned include Modern Warfare's "unified progression" system which will work across multiplayer modes, cross-platform play, the removal of a traditional season pass, and plans for free content and community events.

Regarding the all-new Gunfight mode, Infinity Ward describes it as a "quick-action, close-quarters" gameplay that's highly competitive and fun to watch. As such, the official Call of Duty Twitch account hosted a showcase match between streamers. The teams featured CouRageJD and TeePee playing against Syndicate and LEGIQN, all popular game streamers or YouTubers. Despite going live with no build-up, the event still climbed up Twitch's game rankings and ultimately settled at #2 behind Fortnite.

Expectations for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are high. The game serves as a reboot, not a remake, of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2007. The original game served as the catalyst for what the franchise since and is perhaps the series' top game in terms of critical reception and innovation, breaking new ground for first-person shooter campaigns and multiplayer modes.

As such, 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will have to live up to both its predecessor's well-loved single-player and substantial multiplayer offerings. Infinity Ward clearly believes it's well-equipped to deliver a game that means fans' expectations, but fans will find out if the game lives up to the hype when it finally launches later this year.
