Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now live. While the game has released to mostly positive reviews, that doesn't mean that everyone is happy with this year's iteration of the FPS franchise. In fact, some fans are pretty frustrated with Modern Warfare's maps, with a variety of complaints beginning to circulate online about the new game's level designs.

One of the primary complaints so far have been about the size of the maps themselves, with some fans believing that it feels closer to Battlefield than the traditional Call of Duty experience. The other chief complaint among players seems to be that there are too many viewing angles throughout the maps, making it more difficult to use a run-n-gun gameplay style. Fans have taken to internet platforms to vent about the issues, though it seems to be a minority of players that have problems with the maps thus far.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a very different style of game than what has been released in the past, even drastically changing the series' gunplay. In a way, it feels like a traditional Call of Duty experience blended with a more tactical shooter like Rainbow Six Siege. It isn't a perfect comparison, though it does explain some player's complaints. The game is meant to be played more slowly and methodically than it has been in the past, so it makes sense that it's more difficult to use a run-n-gun playstyle than in previous entries.

That slower approach does mean that the game lends itself to campy gameplay styles more, which is frustrating, but others may find it to be a bit of a refreshing approach. Call of Duty has worked itself into a difficult position. Change nothing, and part of the internet audience calls it out for failing to iterate. Make changes to the core experience, like maps that reward power positions and slower approaches, and the audience may get upset that it isn't Call of Duty enough. There's no easy solution for that problem, as the resources required to please both camps would essentially require two games to be released simultaneously. Between that issue and the game's source material, 2019 has become one of Call of Duty's most controversial years.

Perhaps future maps will cater more towards the audience upset with the current designs. All Modern Warfare map DLC will be free, so it would be a good way to please both audiences. Only time will tell though, so players will just have to keep checking their corners for now.
