A fix for an extremely destructive bug has finally been released to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players. While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has a long list of problems, this game-breaking particular bug locked players out of the game and refused to budge. Thankfully, Infinity Ward has a fix for players who have been impacted by it.

The bug originally appeared around July or August, and it affected a wide range of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players. Since then, the bug has been relatively absent, but players originally affected have been potentially locked out of multiplayer functionality for months.

The bug was originally triggered due to a looping error code. When players boot up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Call of Duty: Warzone, the title goes through a "fetching online profile" phase. During this phase, the game can occasionally get stuck looping, resulting in an indefinite lock out of online play as the game believes the player is loading duplicate accounts. After the developers instituted an original fix, the bug resurfaced in November and has locked players out for several weeks.

Earlier this week, Infinity Ward announced a backend fix that will allow thousands of players access to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone again. This update is an important fix for the Call of Duty community, as many players are looking forward to the release of Season 1 content in the next few days.

If the bug had not been repaired before the new season's launch, many players would not be able to access Call of Duty: Warzone day one. This would mean that they could have potentially missed vital time to progress their battle pass, special sales, and enjoy new content with friends.

Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare players hope that error code 664640 is permanently dead. After inconveniencing players for an extended amount of time, many fans are ready to return to take on the grind and join the friends on the battlefield.

Call of Duty: Warzone will be integrating with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as of December 16. Once the integration is complete, all eyes will be on Call of Duty to see if the process positively affects the game's community. The future success of both Warzone and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War may rely on successfully completing the upcoming merge.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
